5 signs you’re making progress that don’t show up on the scales

The ‘sad step’ only tells part of the story. Here’s how to tell whether your healthy habits are paying off, even if your body weight hasn’t changed much.

One of the biggest reasons people lose motivation on their health journey is that they don’t see the number on the weighing scales moving.

You might be exercising regularly, eating better and making healthier choices, but if your weight stays the same, it’s easy to feel disheartened.

But according to Jane Ogden, Professor in Health Psychology and author of How to Eat Well at Every Age, weight is only one measure of health.

“The scales can’t tell you things like how healthy your heart is, how strong your bones are, or whether you’re building muscle.”

“It doesn’t even differentiate between body fat, muscle or water retention. Yes, it’s a useful measure for health, but it’s not the whole picture.”

And it’s easy to let the numbers decide whether you’ve had a “good” or “bad” week. “The sad step only tells you one thing about your body – your weight on that particular day,” says Joe.

“It doesn’t tell you how much stronger you’ve become, how much fitter you feel, or the healthy habits you’re building.”

In fact, strength, fitness and wellbeing can all improve long before your body weight changes. So here are 5 signs that the work you’re putting in is paying off.

1. You’re getting stronger

Strength is one of the clearest signs that your efforts are paying off. Maybe you’re lifting heavier dumbbells than you were a few weeks ago, doing more reps, or holding a plank for longer.

As Joe says: “I love seeing people get stronger because it’s something you can feel. Every extra rep or heavier weight is a sign that you’re showing up for yourself. Your body is changing, even if the scales don’t show it.”

2. You feel fitter

Some of the biggest fitness wins happen outside your workouts. You might notice you’re walking up a hill without stopping, carrying the shopping more comfortably or chasing after the kids without feeling quite so out of breath.

These are real signs that show you’re getting fitter, even if your weight hasn’t changed.

3. You have more energy

When you’re moving regularly, eating nutritious food and looking after yourself, you might notice that everyday life doesn’t feel quite so tiring.

Maybe you’re no longer relying on that afternoon coffee, you’ve still got energy to go for a walk after work, or house chores don’t leave you feeling wiped out.

“We should exercise to feel good, not just to lose weight,” says Joe. “Having more energy to get through your day is a win worth celebrating.”

4. You’re more confident

Progress isn’t just physical, it can change how you feel about yourself, too. Maybe you feel more comfortable walking into a workout class, you’re proud of yourself for sticking to your routine, or you’re starting to believe you’re capable of more than you thought.

“Looking after your health is a great confidence-booster,” says Joe. “Every workout you complete, every home-cooked meal you make, you’re choosing to do something great for your body and mind.”

5. Healthy habits are becoming part of your routine

One of the biggest wins is when healthy choices stop feeling like hard work. You might find you no longer have to convince yourself to do a short workout. You’re planning meals more often or naturally making healthier choices.

Jane says it’s worth celebrating the habits themselves, rather than only focusing on the end goal. “If your aim is to be more active, then being more active is the success. Celebrate those changes as you make them.”

The bottom line

Remember, your weight naturally changes from day to day because of things like hydration, hormones, meals and how much water you’re storing.

If you’re trying to get fitter, healthier or lose weight, don’t let the scales be the only way you measure success as body weight is only one piece of the puzzle.

So instead of asking, “What do the scales say?” try asking yourself: Can you move your body for 20 minutes today? Can you make one healthy meal? Can you swap one fizzy drink for a glass of water?

“When you focus on these small daily wins, it all starts to feel much more manageable,” says Joe.

Because progress isn’t defined by one number. It’s built through the small choices you make every day.
